Alright Mr. D. L. Geary. Check out what I've got for you this year. Two new designs, no lighthouses, no lobsters, no sailboats. Something new, something fresh. Eat your heart out.

Each year, the D. L. Geary Brewing Company (Portland, ME) awards a $5,000 scholarship to a MECA student who submits the best design/concept for their summer ale packaging. And ahem...not only do you get $5,000 cash, you also get a years supply of beer. Amazing.
My friend Kelsey and I teamed up last year, but unfortunately did not win. So below are my lastest attempts at the cash and yummy libations. My main goal for these designs was to try something new. The first one uses type to convey the feeling of a Maine summer. I played around with different colorways, and ended up with a beach ball color theme—placing different colors on each side of the box. And I also decided to enter a blue and orange version.

My second concept is taken from one of my collages. I thought it could be interesting to make a pattern flow around an entire 12-pack box.

After spending so much time on these, I look back now and realize there's so much more I could've done. The concepts are good, but the designs could've been pushed. Maybe the type needs to be more "gritty," less straight up and down, more asymmetrical. I had a hard time working the type into the second concept, resorting to a solid band along the bottom. Maybe there's another way to integrate the type into this pattern. Should the pattern be bigger? I'm afraid the design as a whole looks a bit feminine.
So, who knows if I'll win the big bucks. All in all, I enjoyed the project. Special thanks to Emma Sampson for the photography work.
Check out all my awesome classmates' entries here.

Congrats Morgan!
You are so good - congrats
Congratulations.
Shame I won't make it "home" to drink any of this this year as Geary's Summer is a huge personal favorite!
